Golden Globes: Noah Baumbach responds to partner Greta Gerwig's Best Director snub

Marriage Story filmmaker Noah Baumbach has responded to the Golden Globes snub of his partner Greta Gerwig.

Two years after Natalie Portman took a swipe at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for failing to nominate a single woman while presenting the award, the voting body once again opted to nominate just men in the category.

Many expressed their anger on social media, naming Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lulu Wang (The Favourite) and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers) as just three of the women directors who deserved nominations.

When Baumbach – who is in a long-term relationship with Gerwig – was asked about the controversy by Variety, he responded: “I can’t speak to the process, but I can say that so many of my favourite movies this year were made by women – Greta’s Little Women being one of them.”

He continued: “Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir I loved [and] Lulu Wang’s The Farewell. I’ve been so exited by the work that so many women have done.”

Tonight’s ceremony will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Films competing for the top prizes include The Irishman, Marriage Story, Rocketman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
